The Bath Hot Air Balloon Club is set to join other balloonists in an exciting attempt to cross the English Channel from Dover to France. This daring challenge, steeped in aviation history, will see the crew navigate the 21-mile stretch of water in hot air balloons, following in the footsteps of pioneers like Jean-Pierre Blanchard, who made the first crossing in 1785.
The event will bring together experienced balloonists to test their skills against the Channel’s unpredictable winds and weather. For the Bath Hot Air Balloon Club, it’s an opportunity to showcase their expertise and take part in a thrilling and historic adventure, celebrating both the past and present of ballooning.
As the Bath Hot Air Balloon Club prepares to take on the English Channel crossing in their G-CMEX rainbow balloon, pilot Jerry Davis emphasized the significance of raising awareness for Suicide Prevention UK. Jerry stressed that while the challenge is a thrilling adventure, its a platform to bring attention to mental health issues and suicide prevention.
“It’s important to keep raising awareness,” Jerry said. “Every effort counts in starting conversations about mental health and helping those who need support. This flight is not just about the challenge; it’s about showing that people are not alone and that help is available.”
Experienced pilot Mark Stelling will join Jerry in their ambitious attempt to cross the English Channel. Both Jerry and Mark are passionate about using this historic challenge not only to showcase their extensive ballooning skills but to highlight the importance of mental health awareness. “This flight is more than just an adventure,” said Jerry, “it’s about making a difference.”
